Fortrose Academy is situated in the picturesque village of Fortrose, with a catchment area comprising the Black Isle peninsula to the east of Inverness.

Established in 1791 and relocated in its present position in 1891, the school has grown steadily over the years as the attractions of the Black Isle have become more widely recognised and the population has expanded.

The main aim of the school is to provide a happy and secure environment where each pupil feels valued as an individual.

The objectives of the school can be summarised as:

  1. to identify and develop fully the talents of our pupils and to encourage the highest possible level of academic attainment.
  2. to foster an atmosphere of diligence, tolerance, co-operation and mutual respect at all times.
  3. to ensure that all school activities and arrangements are as effective and relevant as possible.
  4. to maintain and develop the most effective communication between school and home and promote a genuine sense of partnership.
  5. to encourage links between the school and the community at large in order to best prepare pupils for their roles in society.

A Message from the Rector

I am very happy indeed to welcome you to Fortrose Academy.

There has been a school in this area, associated with the ecclesiastical establishment at Rosemarkie, and later in Fortrose, since the early mediaeval period, but the Academy itself dates from 1791 and the school celebrated its bicentenary in June 1991. The earliest part of the present school was erected in 1891 but little now remains of the original building apart from the clock tower. The main part of the present school was built in 1966 with a separate extension following in 1973. Over the years Fortrose Academy has mirrored the life of the community is serves and it has produced many pupils who have made valuable contributions to society in general.

Our concern, of course is not just for the past but with the responsibilities we have for our present pupils and how we equip them to cope with the needs of a rapidly changing world. I am sure that the pupils involvement with this Internet Project will exemplify these broad aims of the school. What better way to combine a learning of the past than through the means of the technology of the future.

At Fortrose Academy we value highly the concept of excellence and, like all the other great "Academies" in our history, we also emphasise the development of the whole person through a well-rounded education. That form of education will not come solely from the school. It will come from a partnership of school, pupils, parents and the community at large. Each of us will learn from the others.

It is within that philosophical framework that we work in partnership with the pupils of Fortrose Academy and we can, I believe, look forward to the future with confidence. I am confident that this Scottish History Project will be a success and encourage you to support us in our efforts.

No other country in the world can boast a life span more rich or diverse than Scotland. The true story of the people, the battles, the nobility and its Kings and Queens, is more thrilling than any novel, and has more love stories than all the Hollywood Movies.

Each week we will produce one issue about the history of Scotland. To receive these multimedia stories, please subscribe to The History of Scotland Channel.
